  • Description
  • The Volitan Lionfish is one of the most recognized and popular of all marine fish. Due to its bright coloration and fancy fins and quills, the Volitan Lionfish is a true gem of a fish and a showpiece fish in just about any aquarium. The body of the Volitan Lionfish is reddish brown with various black and white markings.

Volitan Lionfish can reach a fully grown size of around 15 inches and shouldn’t be kept in tanks smaller than 125 gallons. Multiple Volitan Lionfish can be kept together in larger tanks as well. Volitan Lionfish can be added to reef tanks with caution, but will try to eat anything they can fit into their mouths including smaller fish and invertebrates.

The sting of the Volitan Lionfish is venomous and must be treated immediately. The best means to deal with a Volitan Lionfish sting is to run the string under hot water. If the string does not get better fast, you should seek medical attention. If you are known to be highly allergic, you should seek medical help right away.

Volitan Lionfish need a lot of rock to hide in to feel comfortable in an aquarium. Being carnivores, the Volitan Lionfish need lots of meat in their diet. When acclimating to life in an aquarium live foods like feeder shrimp, small fish and crabs should be used to get the Volitan Lionfish to eat. Over time you can move a Volitan Lionfish over to fresh and frozen pieces of high quality seafood. Also Volitan Lionfish should never be released into waters they are not native to. The Caribbean has been infested with Volitan Lionfish in recent years, believed to all started by Volitan Lionfish being released by aquarist who no longer wanted them.
