  • Description
  • The Spiny Box Puffer is a large and very personable pufferfish. Spiny Box Puffers have a mostly light tan to brown body with strong dark brown to black spots and markings. Spiny Box Puffers have spines all over their body which help it defend itself from more aggressive fish. Spiny Box Puffers also have big blue eyes which make them seem like they're more a family pet than a fish.

Spiny Box Puffers reach a maximum adult size of around 11 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 150 gallons. Spiny Box Puffers are semi-aggressive fish and might go after smaller and slower fish and inverts. This makes the Spiny Box Puffer a bad fish to add to your reef tank.

Spiny Box Puffers can also get along with other puffers in larger tanks. Spiny Box Puffers have the ability to inflate their body well over twice its size to scare off other fish. For this reason, you should never use a net while moving a Spiny Box Puffer. An acrylic or plastic container would be a much better choice. Spiny Box Puffers should never need to be made to inflate for amusement, since it's very stressful on the fish.

Spiny Box Puffers are carnivores and need a diet that is high in meaty foods. Foods like mysis and brine shrimp and high quality meaty frozen foods will be good for juvenile Spiny Box Puffers. As your Spiny Box Puffer get larger it will need foods like chunks of fresh seafood to stay healthy. Since Spiny Box Puffers have beak like teeth, feeding them foods with tough shells will help keep their teeth ground down.
