  • Description
  • The Whitecheek Tang is a stunning and very active surgeonfish from Hawaii. Whitecheek Tangs have a mostly black body with strong yellow markings below their fins and a white tail. Whitecheek Tangs also have a white mark under their eyes, hence their name.

Whitecheek Tangs reach a maximum adult size of around 8 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 150 gallons. Whitecheek Tangs are semi-aggressive fish, but shouldn't bother most other fish, coral or inverts in your tank. This makes Whitecheek Tangs a great addition to reef tanks.

Whitecheek Tangs might be aggressive towards other tangs, especially other Acanthurus tangs. To help reduce aggression between tangs, try keeping them in as large as a tank as possible and also introduce them at the same time. Have a steady supply of algae for your tangs to graze on during the day will also help reduce aggression.

Whitecheek Tangs are strong swimmers and will benefit from a tank with lots of horizontal swimming room. Whitecheek Tangs also like tanks with strong random flow. Whitecheek Tangs can easily fall victim to marine ich, so quarantine is a must with them. Also boosting their immune system with selcon and garlic should help them fight off disease.

Whitecheek Tangs are herbivores and require a diet that is rich in green foods. Foods like nori and marine algae sheets, high quality flake and pellet foods, spirulina, high quality frozen foods and mysis and brine shrimp should keep your Whitecheek Tang healthy and happy.
