  • Description
  • The Dragon Wrasse is one of the most interesting and unique of all the wrasses. Dragon Wrasses look dramatically different from their juvenile state to fully grown adults. Juvenile Dragon Wrasses have two fins they extend up from their heads and resemble horns. As Dragon Wrasses age they lose their green coloring and also these “horns” and tend being browner in coloration.

Dragon Wrasses reach a maximum size of around 12 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 125 gallons in size. As juveniles Dragon Wrasses can be kept in reef tanks, but as they age they become more aggressive. Dragon Wrasses will eat smaller fish and most inverts, making them a bad choice for reef tanks. Dragon Wrasses are also well known for moving around rocks and knocking down coral, making them terrible for reef keepers. Dragon Wrasses really do the best when kept in large FOWLR tanks with more aggressive tank mates.

Dragon Wrasses need to be kept in systems that have a tight fighting lid, or they will jump out if spooked. It is also important to have lots of live rock and a decent depth sand bed. Dragon Wrasses will need to hide in the rock work if nervous and tend to burrow in sand beds as well.

Being carnivores, Dragon Wrasses require a diet of meaty foods. Foods such as mysis and brine shrimp, high quality meaty frozen foods and chunks of high quality seafood like shrimp, clams, fish and scallops will help your Dragon Wrasse stay healthy and thrive.
